You Belong Here: Finding Acceptance When the World Makes You Feel Unwanted
Updated: Jul 18

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." — John 13:35
Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt like you didn't belong?
Maybe you've wondered why friendships seem to come so easily for everyone else.
Maybe you've replayed hurtful words in your mind long after everyone else forgot they even said them. Maybe you've questioned if something is wrong with you.
If you've ever felt that way, I want you to know something before you read another word:
You are not alone.
I remember my first day of kindergarten. I laid on my bed in tears, terrified to leave the safety of home for a place filled with strangers. Looking back, I wonder if that was the first time I sensed that fitting in was going to be difficult for me.
Home was different. I was my dad's little rock star, my mom's baby, and the little sister who was loved beyond measure. School, however, became a different story.
As the years passed, words like scruffy, stupid, and weird became labels that followed me. I was sensitive, and every unkind comment seemed to take root in my heart. Night after night, I lay awake wondering, "What's wrong with me? Why can't I fit in?"
The heartbreaking part wasn't what others called me.
It was that eventually, I started believing them.
By high school, I had become my own worst critic. If someone had asked me if I liked myself, I would have answered, "No." I believed I was ugly, stupid, and unworthy of being accepted.
What's even more painful is that those lies didn't stay in high school.
They followed me into adulthood. Into my relationships. Into my marriage. Into motherhood.
Then one day, I heard my own daughter repeating the very same lies about herself.
My heart broke.
Somehow, the pain I had carried had begun spilling into the life of someone I loved more than anything.
That became a turning point.
Around that time, I read a book called If You Could See as Jesus Sees by Elizabeth Oates. One sentence stopped me in my tracks:
"Every time we criticize ourselves, we call God a liar."
I had never thought about it that way.
If God created me intentionally...
If He called me His masterpiece...
If He loved me enough to send His Son for me...
Then who was I to argue with Him?
Little by little, I began replacing the lies with truth. I realized that my worth had never depended on whether I fit in with everyone else. It had always been found in the One who created me.
Am I still a little weird?
Absolutely.
But now I smile when I say it.
God didn't create us to all look, act, or think the same. He created each of us with purpose. What I once viewed as flaws, He can use for His glory.
Psalm 139 reminds us:
"I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
Those aren't just beautiful words.
They're God's truth about you.
One of my favorite parts of Elizabeth Oates' book reminds us that when we read Scripture, we see Jesus constantly welcoming the people everyone else overlooked. He ate with those others avoided. He loved those others rejected. He chose those others counted out. If that's who Jesus is, then why would He ever reject you?
That's also why Centre County Faith exists.
Not to create another church, but to bring all of the wonderful people from Centre County churches together.
Not to tell people they have to have life figured out.
But to bring believers together across our community and create a place where people can encounter the love of Jesus.
If you've been hesitant to attend because you're afraid you won't fit in, I understand that fear more than you know.
I can't promise you'll find perfect people.
But I can promise we'll do our best to love people the way Jesus loves people.
Your past doesn't define your future.
Those words spoken over you don't define your identity.
Your mistakes don't define your worth.
Jesus does.
So whether you feel awkward...
Broken...
Different...
Or like you've spent your entire life searching for where you belong...
I hope you'll remember this:
You belong because you belong to Him.
If you're struggling today...
Take a few minutes to sit with God and let these songs remind you who you are in Christ:
Who I Am — Ben Fuller
Voice of Truth — Casting Crowns
I Am Yours — Lauren Daigle
Battle Belongs — Phil Wickham
Rescue Story — Zach Williams
Maybe today is the day you stop believing the labels others gave you and begin believing the name God gives you:
Loved. Chosen. Accepted. His.

If You Could See as Jesus Sees: Inspiration for a Life of Hope, Joy, and Purpose, the author, Elizabeth Oats talked about
Stop the Self-Loathing: She encourages moving beyond the "darkness of negative self-talk" and recognizing our inherent value.
See Through God's Lens: She asks readers to view themselves as "precious and honored" masterpieces created by God, rather than focusing on flaws.
Trust in His Creation: The core message is that when we criticize ourselves, we are criticizing the Master Creator who made us.
A quote from the book, “Every time someone-wheather our husband, our friend, or our parent-gives us a compliment and we turn it down, we call that person a liar. Every time we criticize ourselves, we call God a liar.”
